NEW RESEARCH IDENTIFIES GENETIC EFFECTS OF DRINKING WATER TOXIN

MEDIA INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY

A Brisbane PhD student with the CRC for Water Quality & Treatment, Mr Peter Bain, will be called upon to present to Australias brightest scientific minds at a national conference in Brisbane next week.

Mr Bain has been selected to inform hundreds of Australia's leading scientists and researchers about his research into a toxin found in blue-green algae and also natural water which can potentially activate genes related to various diseases such as arthritis and asthma.

The National Conference of the Cooperative Research Centres Association will be held in Brisbane for three days from this Wednesday, 17th May.

It will debate and review a range of scientific issues in the areas of transportation, environment, creative industries and other fields, as well as showcase world-first research projects currently underway in Australia through Australia's Cooperative Research Centres.

There are currently some 70 CRCs in operation; the CRC Programme has attracted some $2.6 billion in Federal Government funding since it started in 1990.

Mr Bain has been selected to present his findings including the ways the toxin may affect cells in the body.

"I'm thrilled to be presenting my research to an audience that contains some of the best scientific and research minds in Australia" said Mr. Bain.
